Obstacles are useful features in 2-d scrollers because they mean you have to steer your hero around the landscape.

This isn't going to be the worlds most exciting obstacle. If you want to turn this into an impressive game, you'll have to add some of your own creativity into it. But it will be sufficient to demonstrate the technique.
