Sound is pretty easy, but the first thing to know is which formats are supported.
Annoyingly, each browser seems to have a slightly different set of sound formats they allow. For example, WAV files are supported by almost everything except Microsoft Internet Explorer.
The most universally accepted formats are AAC and MP3.
